Choosing a Portable Genset
Regardless of whether you’re an avid camper looking to power a few home comforts, a home-owner who wants a backup electricity supply for emergencies, or a tradesman looking to power your tools, selecting the right size generator (running watts and starting watts) is paramount. Starting watts are the extra watts needed for two-to-three seconds to start motor-driven products like a refrigerator or circular saw. Running, or rated watts, is the continuous watts needed to keep items running. To determine your generator wattage requirements: 1. Select the items you wish to power at the same time. 2. List the running watts and additional starting watt requirements for each item (check your owner's manual for each product). 3. Add the RUNNING WATTS of all the items you wish to power, and thats your running watts. 4. Select the ONE ITEM with the highest number of additional starting watts. Add it to your TOTAL RUNNING WATTS. You'll need a generator peak power with this many STARTING WATTS.
Diesel Gensets vs Petrol Gensets
Normally the bigger the job the greater the need for a diesel generator. Petrol generators are great for small-scale projects, like providing power for a camping trip or even running a small hobby farm, but the greater power and efficiency of a diesel generator makes it the choice for larger-scale operations. Petrol is much more volatile than diesel. So if you’re carrying lots of fuel for your generator, diesel is a safer option plus petrol generators require more maintenance than diesel generators. If you are looking to use the generator for heavy commercial use, then diesel is the way to go. But if you are already operating other equipment with petrol, for an emergency backup or holidays use, then a petrol generator is for you. It really comes down according to your needs.
