What's the best pressure washer for cleaning cars?

A pressure washer can make short work of cleaning a car. If you are using them primarily for car detailing, they are an essential tool that can work at a safe PSI for multiple tasks. Use the right pressure, nozzle, and car cleaning compounds to get the dirt off.

When washing your car, it’s important to use a pressure washer with the appropriate power (PSI: pounds per square inch) and water flow (GPM: gallons per minute). The higher the PSI, the more force the water will have as it leaves the tip of the washer. The higher the GPM, the more water the washer will release. Washing a car with a pressure washer requires around 1,900 & 2,800 cleaning units.

Cleaning Units represent the combination of force and amount of water a pressure washer can produce. This is demonstrated in the equation below:

PSI x GPM = Cleaning Units

1500PSI x 2GPM = 3000 cleaning units

Choose a pressure washer with a setting of 1200 & 1900 PSI. It’s safe to use for cars, so you’ll need to worry about damaging the paint on your car. Experts recommend using a pressure washer with 1.4 & 1.6 GPM. If you are worried don't get so close to the car?

How do they work?

A pressure washer is not that complicated. It's really just a water pump powered by a motor be it electric or fuel. The washer takes in ordinary water from a faucet (tap), the pump accelerates the water to high pressure, and then squirts it from a hose at speed through a trigger gun, it is using less water than your tap is suppling because the nozzle is way smaller than the tap outlet.

What psi power washer do I need?

Most electric pressure washers create 1300-1700 psi with a water flow of 1.5 gallons per minute (GPM), but experienced contractors recommend between 2000 and 3000 PSI and a flow of at least 2.5 GPM to clean dirty concrete or brick walls effectively.

Is it OK to use a power cleaner on a car?

Yes, choose a setting of 1200 & 1900 PSI. Experts recommend using a pressure washer with 1.4 & 1.6 GPM

Can you run a power cleaner off a water tank?

Yes, you can run a pressure washer off a water tank in the same way as you would from a tap. It will put pressure on the water and force it out of the spray wand the same as if you are using a tap.

Is 1700 psi enough?

Not for the tough jobs no. Petrol or diesel-powered models typically put out 3,000 to 4000 psi of pressure compared with 1,300 to 1,700 psi for electric models. Much higher pressure allows the top-performing machines to clean a grimy concrete patio three times faster than the fastest electrics.

What psi removes paint?

2,000 psi isn't enough to remove paint, industrial power washes can spray up to 7,000 psi, which will destroy most wood surfaces, so 3000 psi should do the job. You should work on peeling paint with a scraper first any remaining paint, you can apply a paint stripper to soften it. You'll need to give it about 15 to 30 minutes to set in.

How much PSI do I need to clean concrete?

To clean your deck or the exterior of your house, you need 1500 psi. To clean your concrete driveway, you need 3000 psi. If you want to use a pressure washer for all these tasks, you need one that is adjustable and can deliver a force of up to 3000 pounds per square inch.

Can I start my water cleaner without water?

If you've run the pressure washer without water running through the system, it can certainly damage the Pump; it needs water circulating through it or it can damage seals, gaskets and other components.

Can a power cleaner kill you?

A pressure washer is a very strong cleaning tool that sprays water at SUPER high pressure. It can cause serious wounds if you accidentally point it at yourself or others.
